Physiological and Molecular Background of Maize Cold-Tolerance Enhancement with S-methylmethionine Salicylate

Abstract Low temperature is amongst the most influential abiotic stress factors, having deep impact on plant growth, yield and productivity. Studies beneficial effects of certain biologically active substances, S -methylmethionine (SMM) salicylic acid (SA) have provided a lot valuable information regarding their role to counteract harmful environmental stresses such as chilling. To obtain more complex stable defence compound with an extended range stress-protective effect, new derivative salicylate (MMS) was synthesised from natural, substances SMM SA. Since both original materials roles, expected combine stabilise unstable in compound, thus providing tolerance. Photosynthetic efficiency accumulation stress-related metabolites (polyamines flavonoids) were measured chilled control plants, without MMS pretreatment, expression changes several genes involved cold response analysed by quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) detailed microarray study.
